  • Paul Walters is the Environmental Coordinator
  • He is a toxicologist who has a B.Sc. degree in Biochemistry and an M.Sc. degree in Toxicology.
  • After the completion of his studies, he worked in a pharmacology lab in Toronto, which was followed by work with a company that specialized in the recycling of metals.  Following this, he worked as an environmental toxicologist with a company that specialized in environmental monitoring.
  • Most of his career he worked with Health Canada initially as a risk manager with the Risk Management division, whose main role was to control substances declared “CEPA toxic” under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA).  He also worked as an evaluator in the New Substances Program and became one of the managers of the Health Outcomes division. This was followed by one year as a section head of Health Canada’s Biomonitoring division.
  • He has considerable experience in the Federal Contaminated Sites Action Plan (FCSAC), where his role as a Senior Environmental Advisor provided the opportunity to gain a lot of knowledge and experience on issues related to the most contaminated sites in Canada. While most of his experience was in the area of providing and developing guidance at the science level for the federal departments involved in FCSAP, he provided support in the areas of tracking and contract management/procurement for the Contaminated Sites Division.
  • Overall, while most of his experience is science-based, he has spent many years as the Health Canada lead for asbestos, vermiculite, particulate matter (PM 2.5), dioxins and furans, and wood-burning stoves (EPA Certified).
  • Paul has recently engaged in projects under the Chemicals Management Plan, a program that was developed to protect humans and the environment, against commercial chemicals in Canada.
